Biocontrol in the Caribbean by IIBC: past, present and future trends

IIBC has a number of ongoing insect and weed control programs of regional significance. 1) Two parasitoids of the coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei), have been introduced recently to Ecuador and Mexico after rigorous quarantine in the U.K. They are now established in the field and percentage of parasitism of up to 50 per cent have been reported in experimental lots. EEC and IDRC funding is helping now to introduce these agents to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador from the main culture in Tapachula, Mexico. CIBC is also assisting the Colombian coffee federation with parasitoid introductions and the development of mycopesticide for the borer using strains of Beauveria bassiana. 2) Various field surveys of pathogens of the itch grass (Rottboelia cocchinchinensis) in India and Sri Lanka have yield several fungi of interest and a Colletotrichum fungus in currently screened in Thailand for specifity. 3) Studies in Honduras on the Diamondback Moth (Plutella xylostella) have concentrated on the introduction of exotic parasitoids and the quantification of their impact. Bioassays with various insecticides have been performed to select for chemicals with minimal effect on the parasitoids and to select for resistant strains of these natural enemies. 4) Simular bioassays are being undertaken in Trinidad on indigenous parasitoids of the pigeon pea borer (Ancylostomia stercorea) in a project that involves life table studies of both pest and plant.
