Biological control of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera, Scolytidae): previous programmes and possibilities for the future

An account is given of the coffe berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), and its natural enemies, with emphasis on biological control against the pest. Early biological control attempts using a bethylid parasitoid, Prorops nasuta Waterston, were not very successful, but recent programmes have utilized new geographical races of P. nasuta and another bethylid, Cephalonomia stephanoderis Betrem, with encouraging initial results. Other potential agents are discussed with suggestions for future work and prospects for success.
