Trends in packaging of coffee and coffee products

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages consumed throughout the world and is the most widely traded commodity next only to oil. Out of 57 lakh metric tonnes of world's production of coffee during 1990, India's contribution was around 2 lakh metric tonnes (3.5 per cent). Brazil tops the list of coffee producing countries, the second being Colombia. Considerable amount of coffee and its processed products are exported from India either in bulk or in unit packs. In recent years, due to the fluctuating trend in export, much attention has been given to boosting the export. Functional and attractive packaging will be, in a sense, a promising line for higher returns and also for establishing image of Indian brands in export trade. In internal market also, proper packaging will help in minimising the quality losses during storage, and will assure quality product under hygienic conditions. The R&D work carried out at CFTRI, Mysore and elsewhere on the packaging and storage of coffee is presented in this paper.
