Introduction field evaluation and adaptability of coffee rust (Hemileia vastatrix) resistant varieties in Papua New Guinea :

Catimor varieties were evaluated on growth, yield and quality between 1987 and 1992, in Papua New Guinea. Part of the evaluation involved the planting of the rust resistant and commercial varieties la different ecological zones in adaptability trials. In the main selection and evaluation trial, green bean yields were collected over three years. Green bean yields were also collected in four adaptability trial sites in the plantation sector. The quality aspects were carried out locally on bean size and cherry/green bean ratios while cup quality testing was achieved with the assistance of both local and international liquorers from Papua New Guinea, Britain, Germany and Kenya. Catimor varieties were found to grow well in traditional arabica coffee growing areas. The growth and establishment in smallholder areas were enhanced by provision of both temporary and permanent shade. High yielding rust resistant lines were comparable to Caturra and outyielded tall Arusha. The quality of Catimor varieties was equally comparable to that of commercial varieties. Catimor lines were selected and recomended for commercial growing based on growth, yield and quality performances.
