Results of local testings of the promising Robusta coffee clones

Six promising clones of Robusta coffee obtained from the Kaliwining Experimental Garden, i.e. BP 409, BP 288, BP 234, BP 358, BP 254 and BP 210, and one selected from the Sumber Asin Experimental Garden, i.e. SA 237, had been submitted to local testings on several estates in East and Central Java. In these trials, BP 42 and BP 39 -the two major clones for a long time recommended for large scale plantings- were included, the first serving as a standard. Each trial was carried out in a randomized block design with four replicates, with plots of 10 trees planted in single rows. Yields were recorded in periods of 4 to 6 years, begining mostly with the first harvests. In this article results from seven trials, six in East and one in Central Java, were presented. Four of the experimental sites were located at altitudes below 400 m, while the other three between 400 and 800 m above sea level. These trials proved that at lower altitudes the yielding capacities of BP 409, BP 358, BP 234 and SA 237 were superior to that of BP 42, the differences being mostly significant at the level of one or five percent. At higher altitudes the superiorities of these clones seemed to be declining, possibly due to the increased yielding capacity of the standard. But nevertheless these clones, especially BP 409 and BP 234, showed substantial tendencies to retain their potentials. BP 288 gave some better yields at lower altitudes, but it became invariably inferior at higher altitudes. In view of their yielding potentials, BP 409, BP 358, BP 234 and SA 237, have been recommended for large scale plantings, with the possible use of BP 288 for lower altitudes. These clones yield somewhat smaller beans than BP 42, but it is not objectionable, since their respective bean sizes clearly belong to the same group as that of BP 42 within the prevailing bean size classification system
