Tolerance of Bidens pilosa L. and Parthenium hysterophorus L. to paraquat (Gramoxone) in Kenya coffee

Field investigations on Bidens pilosa L. (Black jack) and Parthenium hysterophorus L. tolerance to paraquat (gramoxone 20 percent) were carried out at Coffee Research Station, Ruiru between 1987-90. The four rates, 1,2,3 and 4 l/ha of gramoxone used failed to control the two annual weeds irrespective of the stage of growth. The rates included the recommended rates of 1-2 l/ha. This occurrence emphasizes the need to use alternative herbicides against the two weed species in Kenyan coffee. Frequent changes of the herbicides in herbicide weed management programmes is desirable in order to avert such tolerance occurrences of weeds to particular herbicides. Herbicides like glyphosate (Round-up) and basta which can effectively kill the two weed species are suggested for use
