Observaciones sobre la transición en el sector cafetalero en Centroamérica

This study examined changes in the environment of the coffee agroecosystem as a result of changes implemented in the coffee zone of Carazo, Nicaragua. In 1980 a government decree established the National Commission of Coffee Renovation (CONARCA), which embarked on a program of modernizing coffee production in the zone. A key part of the renovation program was the elimination of shade trees and replacement of the coffee trees with modern varieties such as caturra and catuaí. Changes were observed in the amount of leaf litter accumulated, air humidity and organic matter. Soil erosion was dependent on slope, but was higher in renovated coffee on north slopes
