Utilization on Coffeea canephora haploids: results of studies in progress :

We have previously presented our studies on the production of Coffea canephora haploids and doubled haploids (10th ASIC). We have continued work on diversification of haploid sources, in accordance with the suggestions based on the genetic structure described for this species (11th ASIC). Doubled haploids are a good tool for genetic studies of several traits, especially rust resistance. From a very heterozygous progenitor that is rust sensitive, we have produced resistant, sensitive, and very sensitive doubled haploids. Using this material, genetic control of rust resistance is under investigation. Haploid meiotic behavior and its abnormalities are described. Duplication of chromosome number is accompanied with fertility restoration. However, male or female sterility have been observed for some doubled haploids. Progenies from crosses between doubled haploid lines have been established in field trials. From observation of these progenies, vegetative uniformity is demonstrated within genetic combinations. Therefore, commercial hibrid variety production from selected doubled haploid lines of coffee is considered
