The "Plant Genetic Resources Centre/Ethiopia-PGRC/E" was established in 1976. Its main objectives are to: - promote the collection, evaluation, documentation and scientific study of crop germplasm in Ethiopia, East Africa and adjacent regions; - preserve germplasm by long term storage and maintenance in order to make valuable germplasm available to breeding programmes; - provide germplasm for breeding programmes aimed at the development of higher yield, better quality, disease and pest resistance; - provide new crop germplasm to Ethiopia by means of exchange with other institutions. This article briefly describes the Centre's structure, major activities and its role within the network of genetic resource activities both nationally and at the global level. (ICO.
