Arabica coffee selections and genetic improvement in Kenya

Characteristics required of all varieties are a high yield and good quality coffee. The importance of resistance to leaf rust and Coffee Berry Disease depends entirely upon where the coffee is grown. Five varieties commonly used in Kenya will be discussed here: 1)French Mission is of very variable type; 2) S.L.28 which is a bronzer tipped type; 3) S.L.34; 4) K.7; 5) Blue mountain. Coffee breeding has been a co-operative project between the three East African coffee-growing countries and has been carried out at the Coffee Research Station, Lyamungu, near Moshi in Tanzania where produced some promising hybrids. Which are resistant to all races of leaf rust known to occur in East Africa
