Genética de Coffea; plano de estudos em execuçao no Departamento de Genetica do Instituto Agronómico

An outline is given of the program of studies on the genetics, taxonomy and cytology of Coffea, which is being carried out by the author and his associates in Genetics Department of the Instituto Agronomico of the State of Sao Paulo. This work was commenced in 1932. After some reference to the literature, a short historical account is given of previous work done in Brasil on the improvement of coffee. The main features of the program may be summarised as follows: 1. Taxonomic study of species and varieties of Coffea arabica L. 2. The institution of a herbarium and the maintenance of a representative collection of living forms. 3. Cytological studies to determine chromosome numbers (see table pg. 12) of species and varieties. 4. Studies on the biology of the coffee flower with special reference to crossing and selfing methods. 5. Experiments on vegetative propagation. 6. The genetics of Coffea arabica. 7. Studies of interspecific hybridisation. 8. Studies of the selfsterility of some species and its causes. 9. Discussion on somatic mutations caused by single gene changes and chromosomal variations. The author finally describes methods of breeding improved coffee varieties from the point of view of yield, quality and resistance to the coffee berry borer (Stephanoderes hampei Fer)
