A brief survey is presented of the history of coffee growing and breeding in Brazil, since the introduction of this crop in 1727. The importance of breeding for resistance to Hemileia vastatrix during the past 35 years is emphasized. Preparatory work is in hand for selection for resistance to nematodes in rust resistant material
