A quantitative study of phenotypic characters in the diploid interspecific hybrids of Coffea L

Phenotypic variability, association of several morphological characters and relative genetic potence ratios are reported in three diploid species and their F1 hybrids with a view to explore the vigour of the latter. Relatively high variation of different morphological characters was obvious in the F1 hybrids of C. dewevrei var. "excelsa" x C. eugenioides than those of C. liberica x C. eugenioides and the variation in the parents is attributed to their cross-fertile nature. Relative genetic potence of the parents showed that in both the crosses C. eugenioides had a greater role in imparting its characters to the F1 hybrids. The characters in the female parents were recessive in expression as observed from the correlations in the hybrids. Therefore, identification of compatible hybrid plants and subsequent sub-matings suggested for full expresion in such progeny
