Coffee breeding aiming at resistance to Hemileia vastatrix :
Research on breeding for resistance carried out during the last 15 years is summarized. Information is included on physiological races of the pathogen and SH genes identified in Coffea arabica, C. canephora and C. liberica. Several varieties have been obtained by selection in material from Africa and from crosses between Mundo Novo (New World) and sources of resistance. Promising selections resistant to all races have been obtained from second and third back crosses to C. arabica of a hybrid between C. arabica and C. canephora
