Early determination of yield potential in arabica coffee by applying index selection

Estimates of phenotypic and genotypic variances and covariances for 14 quantitative characters, including yield components, obtained from a trial of 16 varieties over twelve years were used to construct selection indices. The results indicated that the expected genetic advance in yield based on an index containing the first two years' yield and measurements of girth at base of stem and percentage of fruit-bearing shoots will be almost as great (97 relative efficiency) as that obtained by selection bases on ten-year yield totals. It is concluded that a breeding cycle of five years should be sufficient for efficient selection for higher yield
