La fertilité chez les hybrids Arabusta: methodes d'estimation, influence du parent Arabica et relation avec le comportement meiotique

An estimate of pollen fertility was made on a sample of thirty-four Arabusta belonging to families of various origin and cultivated on the IFCC Station at Bingerville, using three methods (staining with carmine, with tetrazolium, germination test). The results were then correlated with female fertility defined by the parameter P1, or percentage of ovule utilisation, directly related to the percentage of peaberries. Variance analysis on the pollen fertility estimation figures revealed a genotype effect, a flowering effect and a genotype-environment interaction which are highly significant. A comparison of the averages of female fertility in three Arabusta families, developed from the same auto-tetraploid Canephora parent, clearly revealed the role played by the parent Arabica in raising the average fertility level of the Arabusta progenies. The irregularities found at meiosis in two Arabusta with a high peaberry percentage indicate that the absence of homology between the two genomes Arabica and Canephora compared in the same cytoplasm Arabusta would appear to bear only on a limited number of chromosomes and not to disturb the overall course of meiosis
