A study of robusta propagation: clone vs. seedling

Seventeen robusta selections tested in two clonal progeny trials and twelve in seedling progeny trial were evaluated for their relative variation for yield and mean yields based on eight years' data. Clonal progeny trials had lower levels of variation for individual plant yield than seedling progeny trial and the variation was further reduced when plots of three plants available in the clonal progeny trials were considered. Mean yield of the clones was in general higher than that of seedling progenies. Crossing between specific mother plants based on their mean performance in these trials is suggested. The position of clonal propagation in robusta coffee cultivation is discussed
