Rapport annuel 1988

Summary review of general activities. Production improvement in arabica coffee. Genetics and biology. The Foumbot and Santa collection in Cameroon represents an important gene "pool" consisting of seven hundred different sources including seventy-one collected in Ethiopia during 1966. The harvests from each variety are regularly assessed. Studies are being continued on the production of Arabica micro-cuttings and their adaptation to field conditions in Costa Rica. A nursery for micro-cuttings of Arabica coffee and a planting-out trial of these microcuttings have also been set up on the Dayes Planteau in Togo. Comparative varietal trials set up at Foumbot and Santa in Cameroon yielded their tenth and eleventh harvests during 1987. The "java" variety, which is top of the classification of thirty five cultivars, produces more than a ton of commercial coffee per hectarea per year. Two diallel trials were partly destroyed by coffee berry disease a both these sites.
