Characters contributing to interspecific divergence in some species of Coffea

Eleven Coffea species were studied for 15 morphological characters for two seasons: length and breadth of leaf; length of corolla, lobe, tube; anther and style; length breadth and thickness of fruit and seed and the ratio between fruit and seed. A simplified D2 analysis revealed that the species could be grouped into 4 clusters with cluster I containing 4 species: arabica, congensis, eugenioides and stenophylla. Cluster II and III having 3 species each: arnoldiana, aruwimiensis, canephora and abeokutae, excelsa and liberica respectively and cluster IV containing a single species, dewevrei. These grouping vis-a-vis the classification proposed by other authors are compared and the importance of multivariate criteria delineating species relationship in the genus is stressed
