Determinacao da velocidade terminal de frutos de café na água, no processo de beneficiamento

This work was carried out to determine the terminal velocity of the green and red coffee beans of the "Catuaí-Vermelho" variety. This parameter is frequently used in projects of hydraulic separators. Specific bulk density, orthogonal dimensions, diameter, projected area, volume, and drag coefficient of coffee beans were also determined. In this paper the coffee beans were analyzed as discrete particles and not as sphericals. The experimental method used to determine the drag coefficient was considered reasonably satisfactory in view of the small difference as compared to the theoretical determination. The main results obtained for the green and red coffee beans were, respectively: - terminal velocity: 12.4 cm s-1 and 16.5 cm s-1; - specific bulk density: 1045 kg m-3 and 1067 kg m-3; - drag coefficient: 0.4372 and 0.4268; - sphericity degree: 0.84 and 0.89; and - diameter: 16.6 mm and 12.8 mm
