Yield gap and constraints to potential productivity in small holder coffee plantations

The factors that influence yield and thereby the yield gap of robusta and arabica coffee in smallholders' plantations in 2 zones of Karnataka, India were quantified using multiple regression analysis. It was shown that a yield gap of > 700 kg/ha of clean coffee existed in the smallholder plantations of Kodagu district. Yields could be substantially improved and the yield gap could be bridged by increased fertilizer use in the case of robusta, and increased fertilizer use coupled with adequate plant protection and soil conservation measures in the case of arabica. Since these factores in turn depend upon the availability of capital and technical information, credit support and intensified extension guidance are called for
