La poda total del cafeto y su relación con las raíces y los nemátodos endoparásitos

The pruning of the coffee tree is the most important cultural activity of the crop, since it extends the productive action of the plants when generating new tissues. The total pruning of foliage, one of the methods that is most used at present, also occurs cutting the plant's stalk 30 or 40 cm from the ground. The purpose of this work was the evaluation of the populational dynamics of the Meloidogyne nematode, in plants totally pruned compared with unpruned plants, as well as measuring the evolution of the roots in both variables. The work was located in San Isidro, Alajuela, Costa Rica, at 1430 m.a.s.l. and some 3000 mm of annual precipitation with two defined seasons of winter and summer. Monthly evaluations of roots and nematodes, were carried out from the beginning of the pruning in February 1988 until February 1989. The results showed that with the pruning carried out during the first months of the year, the populations of the nematodes are significantly reduced during this period. The amount of roots also diminishes, just as its quality or contents of nutriments. This situation permits an important economy in consumer products, like the use of nematicides and fertilizers the year the pruning is carried out. Also, these items can be limited from the year before the pruning under the conditions in which this work was carried out, with a total cyclic pruning system of 4 to 5 years
