Observacoes sobre ensaios de dosagem e epoca de aplicacao e ethefon (ethrel), em cafeeiro, e seu efeito na maturacao dos frutos e na qualidade do café

In three field trials, ethefon (Ethrel) was sprayed on coffee plants at different application time x dose product combinations. Ethrel (2-chloroethane sulphonic acid) which is known to accelerate the ripening of coffee berries, was applied at 4 different stages of berries development, characterized according to the degree of ripening as following: fully developed berries, but still green (stage A), of fully developed berries completly ripened (stage C) and 20 percent of fully developed berries completly ripened (stage D). The product was applied in 5 doses: 0.00 (control), 0.15, 0.30, 0.45 and 0.60 cc/m2 of producing area of each plant (measured in height). Berries were harvested 15, 30 or 45 days after the treatment. Preliminar observations done by the time of harvesting led us to conclude that: (a) treatment of berries at stages A and B with different doses of ethefon had no influence in the number and quality of green berries harvested 15 days after the treatment, when compared with untreated berries. Slight differences in the number of green berries were observed for samples treated at stages C and D harvested 15 days later. However, the increasing in ethefon dose did not affected the number of green berries when compared with samples from untreated plants; (b) no differences were observed between samples at stages B, C and D the controls, harvested 30 days later after treatment with any of the 4 doses of ethefon; (c) when berries at the stage A were harvested 45 days after treatment, an increase in the proportion of green berries was observed, due to the increase of dropped ripened berries, which was directly proportional to the increase of ethefon dose used in the treatment. Berries treated at stages B, C and D did not show any difference regarding the number of green berries and their quality when harvested 45 days after treatment, in comparison with untreated berries. In this case, increasing doses of ethefon did not affected the results
