Control of the coffee margarodid (Icerya pattersoni) for Kenya Coffee Farmers - CIBC

Within the last decade, the margarodid Icerya pattersoni Newst, has become increasingly common on coffee in the Kiambu district of Kenya. In 1984 the CIBC Kenya Station conducted a biological control feasibility study and fund several promising indigenous natural enemies, for example, Rodolia iceryae (Coccinellidae) and Cryptochetum ?pariceryae (Cryptochetidae). On the basis of this study, a three-year project sponsored by Kenya coffee farmers started in January 1986. The initial aim of the project is to attempt to enhance the effectiveness of some of the indigenous natural enemies. During the first few months of the project life history studies have begun on I. pattersoni and R. iceryae so that these insects can be mass-reared in the laboratory. Later, releases of R. iceryae and other natural enemies will be made in coffee blocks set aside for the project
