The overall economics of anaerobic digestion on a coffee state, 1: Design calculation

Management of solid wastes and rising energy costs are two significantly important problems facing the coffee industry today. One possible method to resolve these two problems is conversion of a portion of the solid waste arising in coffee industry into methane gas via anaerobic digestion. In the present series of two articles, an attempt has been made to find out the overall economics of setting up a biogas plant in an estate. Two different models of biogas plants were suggested; one for producing electricity and the other producing gas for cooking purpose. These hypothetical model plants revealed that such a project of setting up a biogas plant in a coffee estate is feasible both technically and economically. The theoretical work on economics of anaerobic digestion proved that this enterprise of anaerobic digestion in coffee estate is highly profitable
