Biological control and distribution of major coffee pest

In Thailand for most insect control methods various chemical formulars of insecticides are used, often for a long time already. Nowadays with increasing awareness of possible natural enemies of insect pests in the ecosystem and the growing interest in pesticide-free agricultural products and time-consuming breeding programmes, biological control of insect pest has received considerable attention. Entomologists and breeders are joining hands in biocontrol research. Although excellent progress has been made in understanding the genetics and biochemistry of host-insect interaction, which reveals only one aspect of biological control on the host surface or within the host, the mechanism behind host resistance or biological control has yet to be grasped. Insect pests are serious problems in every stage of coffee cultivation, i.e. in the seedbed, in nurseries (seedling stage) as well as in young and mature trees in the field. This is partly counterbalanced by the existence of quite a variety of parasites and natural enemies of insect pests. A survey disclosed that at least 19 species of coffee pest and 9-10 species of natural enemies were found in the highlands. This paper summarizes eight species of insect pests, their symptoms and distribution, as well as their natural enemies. These pests are: 1. Green Scales (Coccus viridis, Green) 2. Mealybug (Pseudococcus sp.) 3. Black aphid (Toxoptera aurantii, Fonse.) 4. Hard brown scales (Saissetia sp.) 5. Leaf-rolling caterpillars (Archips micacaena, Wkr.) 6. Red coffee borers (Zeuzera coffeae, Nietn.) 7. Coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei, Ferr.) 8. Coffee stemborer (Xylotrechus quadripes, Chevrolet)
