Performance of some arabica coffee varieties at different locations

Seven varieties of Coffea arabica were transplanted in October 1983 at three different locations in Chiang Mai Province: Nong Hoi station (1,000 m), Khun Chang Khian Station (1,300 m) and Pakia station (1,500 m). The varieties Catimor LC 1662, Catuai Vermelho Yellow Catuai (Brazil) LCH 2077-2-5-65, Red Catuai (Brazil) LCH 2077-2-5-87, Mundo Novo Colacao, Icatu LCH 4789-9 and Mundo Novo LCH 379-19 were planted in the open at a spacing of 2 x 2 m in a Randomized Complete Block Desing with 5 replications per variety per location. Growth parameter measured are: -Tree height. -Canopy width. -Stem diameter. -Number of bearing branches. -Number of nodes on main stem. -Length of bearing branches. -Yield per variety per location. -Cherry and bean weight. The tall varieties included Mundo Novo Colacao, Icatu LCH 4782-9 and Mundo Novo LCH 379-9, whereas the dwarf varieties comprised Catimor LC 1662, Catuai Vermelho, Yellow Catuai (Brazil) LCH 2077-2-5-65 and Red Catuai LCH 2077-2-5-87. The tall group produced longer internodes on main stem and bearing branches and wider canopies. The growth curves of both talls and dwarfs produced the same pattern. Both types of coffee do not differ significantly in terms of number of nodes on the main stem and on the bearing branches, and of number of the bearing branches. Growth and development of the plants at Nong Hoi were better than those at Chang Khian but the plants produced a lower yield at Nong Hoi from the first harvest. Coffee plants grown at Pakia showed a slower rate of growth and development and thus gave the lowest yield compared to those grown at Chang Khian and Nong Hoi. Symptoms of hot and cold disease could be clearly seen yearly at Pakia Station. It can also be considered that the combination of drought and wind in the cool season at Pakia (extreme conditions) might not be suitable for the growth of the coffee plants. Two years after transplanting the plants produced cherries
