Action of coffee on human performance

The observations related to the understanding of mechanism of cellular and tissue function as influenced by coffee and caffeine suggest that the effects are modulated via multiple and complex mechanisms for variety of functions in the brain, muscles and a number of other organs and tissues. In concluding, it is clear from the vast number of investigations, that coffee has modest but distinctly positive and beneficial effects on several categories of mental performances, particularly vigilance, alertness and mood and delays onset of fatigue and therefore prevents decrements of performance in certain situations. The lesson to be learned is that possible interactions with personality, metabolic variances, as well as environmental situations such as stimulation level, time of the day, type of task and duration must be taken into account. Several hypothesis have been proposed to explain coffee and caffeine action on physical endurance and athletic performance. It appears that training, type of physical activity and preceeding nutritional status are significant determinants of the results obtained which cannot therefore be readily extrapolated from one situation to another
