Coffee soils of Chikmagalur District

In India coffee cultivation was started long back around 1700 A.D. Karnataka State tops the list in coffee producing states of India and district wise Chikmagalur comes first by contributing 60 per cent of the country's total coffee production. Under the agro-climatic zone classification Chikmagalur comprises of Hilly zones, Southern transition zones and central dry zones. Five taluks in Chikmagalur district comes under hilly zone, one taluk comes under southern transition zone while on taluk falls under central dry zone. Generally red loam (ultisol) and laterite (oxisols) soils are found in Chikmagalur district. Red loam soils in Karnataka also occur in other districts like Shimoga, Hassan and Kodagu while laterite soils are found in coastal areas of Uttara and Dakshina Kannada and parts of Belgaum, Shimoga, Hassan and Kodagu. Patches of laterite soils are also seen in Bangalore, Bidar and Kolar. The red loam soils found in Chikmagalur district are normally deep and clay content increasse down the profile. Shallow gravelly red soils are also seen. These red soils are heavily leached and have been most often classed under order ultisols. Laterite soils of Chikmagalur district contain large amounts of organic matter and have gravelly texture and are susceptible for erosion due to high slopes
