Technical circular no. 67: The Antestia bug: damage, testing and control

The Antestia bug is a major coffee pest in all areas of Kenya, particularly the West Rift Valley. It is a suc-ing insect which causes blackening of the flower buds, fall of immature berries, rotting and zebra-striping of beans. In the absence of green berries, Antestia feeds on the terminal buds of branches. The attacked bud is thereby killed and the growth of the side shoots leads to fan branching of the affected shoots. The bug leaves no obvious scars or wounds on the surface of berries on which it had fed; damage is not apparent until spoilt parchment appears on the drying tables. This article describes the method of testing for the pest in Kenya, the economic threshold (that is, the level of pest population that, if unchecked, is likely to cause crop losses exceeding the cost of insecticide control) and recommended chemical control measures at smallholder and estate levels.
