Mal de Viñas: información preliminar

Research was being carried out into the "Mal de Viñas", a disease that had been for years damaging plantations in Guatemala's most important coffee areas. The agent and, consequently, control and prevention measures are not known. The disease attacks the leaves of young and adult plants. The leaves turn yellow and fall away leaving small leaves of appoximately 25.5 sq cm (half the size of a normal leaf) at the edge of branches. The plant withers. The main root and rootlets show a dark coffee colour and become incapable of absorbing nutrients. Fusarium xylaroides and Phytomonas leptovasorum are known to cause similar symptoms to those observed in "Mal de Viñas". (ICO. Library Monthly Entries no. 84:8. 1987)
