Mineral deficiencies in coffee of Costa Rica; final report
There are many malnutrition symptoms visible in Costa Rican coffee. Leaf samples were collected from each different type of deficiency. By an almost complete chemical analysis the cause of these symptoms was sought, the following elements could be identified: nitrogen, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, boron, and zinc. If these elements are below the critical level, they produce typical malnutrition symptoms. After identification it was desired to prove the effectiveness of corrective treatments, since several deficiencies affect coffee growing severely. Using some of the many field experiments of the Costa Rican Ministry of Agriculture a response to the different treatments could be found by foliar analysis. A provisional key to the deficiencies is attached. It was compiled of the most characteristic symptoms found. It has to be emphasized that this work is very far from being comprehensive, due to the short time available. Much further work is needed on this subject. The key to the mineral deficiencies of coffee was prepared from symptoms found in commercially grown coffee from all parts of Costa Rica. Frequently these malnutrition symptoms resemble those found especially in citrus and decidues fruit trees. However, in some of the deficiencies the characteristics are very different. In many instances coffee trees were affected by more than one deficiency at the same time. If combination of deficiencies altered the pattern of visual symptoms which would be produced by each one alone, these resulting patterns were included in the key. Otherwise it is possible to separate the malnutrition symptoms produced by the lack of different elements in the same leaves. Many combinations are: N-Mg, Mg-Mn, Mn-Fe, Ca-Mg, Zn-Fe, Ca-B, B-Zn, etc
