Distribution of the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei Ferr. in Jamaica, and an assessment of the chemical control programme (1979-1982)

In 1982 a survey was undertaken to determine the distribution, the infestation levels at different altitudes and the presence of natural enemies of the coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) in Jamaica and to evaluate the effect of the national berry borer control programme. For control every year since 1979, 2 or 3 foliar spraying at 4-6 weekly intervals with endosulfan (thiodan EC 35) at a rate of 1.2 l c.p./ha and ground spraying of the fallen berries with chlordane (60 EC) 0.5 l c.p./ha were applied. Between 1979 and 1982 the borer spread from a small area in the lowlands to the entire coffee growing region of the island. The average infestation level increased from 6.7 to 9.56. The shortcomings of the chemical control strategy are discussed and an integrated approach involving chemical and cultural practices is advocated. (ATA 12(6):59221. 1987)
