Economics of coffee growing in the Cook Islands
Arabica coffee production in being promoted on Atiu, one of the Cook Islands. This issue of Farm Management Notes gives a detailed projection of costs (including labour) and returns of coffee production. The conclusion is that the crop is, because of its unperishable character, attractive for the outer islands and has a place in family-scale agriculture, but that the returns to coffee growing compare unfavourable with those of other crops such as bananas, citrus, pineapple and cassava.
