Economic implications of introducing the new hybrid variety of Arabica coffee
This paper presents a preliminary appraisal of the economic implications of introducing the new variety called Ruiru 11, at both the farm and national level. At the farm level, the costs and benefits of planting Ruiru 11 either on `new' land or uprooting existing varieties for the replanting are determined on a "typical" estate and small holding. The yields are considered at three different levels, pessimistic, conservative and optimistic. The national implications of introducing the variety are also assessed and projected estimates done on coffee production, foreign exchange earnings, production costs and labour requirements between 1985 and 2010. Some recommendations are subsequently suggested
