Economics of agricultural production on smallholder coffee farms in Kenya

This paper explores the economic characteristics of farming systems in the main coffee areas in Kenya. Based on the information from two farm surveys in 1983/84 and 1984/85, a series of farm models were developed to represent different agroecological zones and smallholder farm sizes. Comparisons are presented on the cost and income structures of smallholder coffee, and marked differences in the level of net revenues and disposable cash income shown to exist between the agroecological zones and farm sizes. A breakeven farm size, at current levels of production, which can sustain a smallholder family in subsistence consumption and meet school fees is defined
