Some characteristics of agricultural production on coffee smallholdings in the main coffee producing districts of Kenya

This paper explores the supportive evidence of dividing the smallholder coffee sector into zones of homogenous farming systems and circumstances. The results showed that, although circumstances and practices are diverse amongst smallscale farmers, the results supported the validity of subdividing the main coffee areas into eight homogenous agroecological zones. Differences were found between zones in terms of size of holdings, cropping pattern, and timing of activities. However, while these factors affect the relative economic circumstances of smallholders, important differences were found with respect to fertilizer and fungicide usage. Similarly, significant differences in terms of coffee yields were found between zones, but with no positive relationship between coffee area and yields
