Arabica coffee, a newly revived industry in Queensland
Annual production figures for Australia are currently less than 100 t compared with coffee imports of 32.000 t. The Mareeba/Dimbulah irrigation area of Queensland has an estimated 100-125 ha under cultivation and there are several smaller plantings in other areas of Queensland and northern NSW. Only arabica coffee is grown. The development of mechanical harvesters, three of which are now available in Australia, is largely responsible for the renewed interest in coffee. The Australian market and the economics of coffee production are briefly described. Estimated establishment costs for a 20-ha farm are given. (Hort. Abst. 57(9):7392. 1987)
