Presença de esporos de Hemileia vastatrix Berk et Br. agente causal de ferrugem do cafeeiro, em diferentes altitudes nas principais areas cafeeiras dos estados de Sao Paulo e Parana, Brasil :

Rust (Hemileia vastatrix Berk & Br.) is considered the most important disease that attacks coffee plants. Described in the literature since 1861 in East Africa, only recently has been found in Brazil (Jan. 1970). The main aim of our investigation was to study the role of wind on the spores dispersal at different altitudes, because the methods used to check the spreading of rust at ground level were not proving efficient. The test were carried out with the help of a two-seat single engine aircraft and two different devices for spore trapping. With the data obtained after dozens of flights (from 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 and 1500 meters high) over the major coffee producing areas of the Brazilian State of Sao Paulo and Parana) we came to the following conclusions: 1) Spores of the rust were found at altitudes as high as 1000 meters. 2) They are spread by the wind over long distances. We have collected material 700 kms from the main focus found in the State of Sao Paulo. 3) Rain water is responsible for bringing the spores back from the air to the soil
