Evaluation of new herbicides in Kenya coffee

Evaluation of new and recommended herbicides for weed control in coffee was carried out at the Coffee Research Station, Ruiru, between 1981 and 1982. Eight herbicides, ** Viz: ASULOX, CANDEX, DEVRINOL, FARMQUAT, FUSILADE, GOAL, GOAL-MIX and VELPAR were compared with GRAMOXONE, ROUNDUP, Handweeding and Weed Slashing in terms of weed control, clean coffee yield and quality. Timing of herbicides spraying, handweeding and weed slashing at two and six weeks after the onset of the rains controlled weeds effectively throughout the season. Portulaca sp and Tagetes minuta started as dominant weeds but were almost eliminated in the course of the trial. Bidens pilosa, Commelina sp, Cyperus sp and Ricardia sp remained dominant throughout the trial period. The yield performance with most new product treatments was comparable to that with recommended products except in DEVRINOL which significantly reduced yield., it was concluded that most of the new Herbicides could be used to control weeds effectively without depressing coffee yield and quality
