The coffee culture in Aceh Tengah - present situation and possible improvements. Final report of a consultancy in coffee agronomy under the Dutch Institutional Development Assistance Projet (IDAP/JTA-9a-21) :

The expansion of the coffee area in the 578,000 ha. Aceh Tengah District in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia (25,000 ha Arabica, 5,000 ha Robusta) and the large part of the local population directly involved in coffee production and marketing (80 of the 163,000 inhabitants) prompted government efforts to raise the low productivity of coffee (500-700 kg/ha/yr) in this area where 75 of Indonesia's export of Arabica coffee is produced, mainly by small holders. A Coffee Development Project, started in 1976, included the setting up of on-farm demonstration plots and plans for the foundation of a coffee Development Centre in the area. The present consultancy is part of a Dutch project to assit the Indonesian government in developing such a center. The report evaluates the Coffee Development Project, with special reference to the demonstration plots. Recommendations for a more effective demonstration plot program are given in detail. A large part of the report (including most of the photograpph) is concerned with the incidence of pests and diseases. The most serious ones, urgently needing control, are berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) and green scale (Coccus viridis) in Robusta, leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) and brown eye spot (Cercospora coffeicola) in Arabica, and various root rots (Armilaria mellea, Rosellinia bunodes, Fomes noxius) in both Arabica and Robusta. Reference and additional information for readers not acquainted with the areas are quoted throughout the report and given in appendices and annexes. Items include climate, soils, land use and demography
