Input-output relationship in coffee production on the Mambilla Plateau of Nigeria

The Mambilla highlands of Gongola State is responsible for producing all the arabica coffee in Nigeria. Agricultural production is generally at the Subsistence level. A sample of 60 farms in three major Coffee producing areas revealed that most coffee farmers own less than 5 hectares of Coffee holding, consume between 75 and 100 of food crops produced on their coffee farms and make a net farm income of between N92 and N254 per hectare per annum. Average total production costs range between N552 on smaller farms to N456 on averagely large farms. Because total physical input cost is very minimal in most cases, and because weeding consumes the highest labour input, the use of herbicides has been recommended
