The Beaumont-Fukunaga pruning systems as applied to Robusta coffee

A pruning system devised by Beaumont and Fukunaga in Hawaii was tried on the Robusta coffee estate Bojongrejo (Central Java) and Slosanen (East Java) since 1965. The results showed, that there were no significant differences in yield between the conventional and Beaumont-Fukunaga pruning system; yield records from 1966 up to 1971 are provided in this article. The Beaumont-Fukunaga pruning system did not give the performance as expected beforehand. Presumably, the trial locations and the planting distance did not meet the requirements; the 450 m - 650 m elevation should be regarded as too high and the 2,50 m X 1,75 m planting distance was too narrow. Reconducting the trial at a more suitable altitude and with a broader planting distance is necessary
