All the attempts to change the diageotropic growth habit of coffee plants raised from plagiotropic cuttings, failed. The treatments included the application of several growth regulators (Table 1), exposure to low and high temperatures (Table 3), and elimination of gravity by growing the plants for 3 months on the horizontal klinostat (Fig.1). Only GA3 temporarily changed the growth angle of the shoots to a more upright direction (Table 2, Fig. 2) without permanently alterring the plagiotropic nature of the shoots. This effect of GA3 persisted when the growth retardants CCC or B-9 were applied simultaneously, although they counteracted the internode elongations induced by GA3
