Defining optimum conditions and techniques for successful topworking by cleft grafting of Coffea arabica L. in Kenya

A number of grafting experiments were carried out in 1972-76 at Ruiru to establish the feasibility of vegetative propagation of disease resistant clonal cultivars of Coffea arabica by grafting. Topworking by cleft grafting of single node scions with one pair of leaves attached on 6-months old suckers gave 85 successful takes when grafting was carried out during the short rains in October-November. Grafting during other periods of the year, removing the leaves from the scion or using scions with more than one node gave significantly poorer results. It was essential to protect the graft during the first 3 months with a plastic bag to prevent desiccation. Detailed recommendations are presented for successful topworking of Arabica coffee in Kenya
