The growth and development of arabica coffee under South Indian conditions

The growth pattern of arabica S. 288 and S. 795, which are under large scale cultivation, were studied at Central Coffee Research Institute. The results indicated that two flush periods could be discerned. Studies were carried out on the extension growth of primary, secondary and tertiary branches, since the growth of the main stem is arrested by topping. A period of slow growth from blossom showers up to July is followed by a period of rapid growth from August to October. The vegetative growth slows down with the advent of dry period from November. The growth will be minimum from December to February (dormant period, and is resumed in March after the drought period. The role of environmental and edaphic factors like light, temperature, rainfall and soil moisture on growth is discussed
