Compatibility of nitrogenous fertilizers with alkaline bordeaux mixture

A laboratory study was carried out to find out the extent of loss of N from different nitrogenous fertilizers when added to Bordeaux mixture of varying alkalinity. It was observed thar the loss of N as NH3 from Ammophos (an ammoniacal N carrier) and Sampurna (a complex containing both ammoniacal and amide N) increased with increase in pH of the Bordeaux. No loss was noticed from urea (amide N) even at pH higher than 12.0 under laboratory conditions. Considerable loss occurred from Ammophos and Sampurna when the pH was readjusted to initial values. Excess lime present in Bordeaux mixture (0.5) prepared by micing equal quantities of CuSO4 and lime caused greater loss of N. It was also recorded that addition of Ammophos brought down the pH of alkaline Bordeaux considerably. But the pH drop in 1.1 Bordeaux was negligible. Urea did not affect the pH of Bordeaux mixture
