Aerial spraying; report on test carried out on aerial spraying at Tatu estate, July 1968

A recent meeting held by the Thika Farmers' Association initiated this spray efficiency test with a fixed-wing aircraft. The volumes tested were 1 g.p.a., 2 g.p.a. and 4 g.p.a., the emission rate was constant (1 g.p.a.) and, therefore, tests where the aircraft flew in opposite directions alternately determined the volume per acre. The 1 g.p.a. and the 2 g.p.a. applications gave poor results: at 4 g.p.a. spray cover ranged from 44 per cent - 67 per cent in the satisfactory classes but, of this, only a small proportion of branches covered had spray on top and under surfaces. Evenness in the swath was good in all cases but penetration from the top to lower parts of trees was poor. The 4 g.p.a. showed a great improvement in penetration as opposed to 1 g.p.a. and 2 g.p.a. Spray drift was recorded 40 ft. down wind
