Die Bedeutung der Stomata, der Luffeuchte und der Temperatur für den CO2- und Wasserdampfgaswechsel der Pflanzen

The review summarizes the facts giving indirect evidence of no determining significance of stomata, and the decisive significance of temperature and atmospheric humidit for the gas exchange in plants. This evidence is based namely on the author's simultaneous measurements of photosynthetic and transpiration rates or respiration and dark transpiration, respectively, as well as the leaf temperature. Only attached leaves were used in these experiments, exposed in an air-conditioned leaf chamber, the air temperature in which was automatically controlled according to the natural conditions in the neighbouring air. The facts found on Vine were confirmed in experiments with Laurus cerasus, Calceolaria integrifolia, Zantedeschia, Hydrangea hortensis, Acer platanoides and Coffea arabica. All results show that the dynamics and rate of gas exchange are not determined by the movements of stomata; the rates and dynamics of transpiration and respiration are given by the temperature, the photosynthetic rate being given namely by light and by atmospheric humidity, too
