Determinación de la temperatura letal para hojas de café en noches de heladas

The right time for applying artificial fog to control frost effects is critical. It must be done before the temperature of the air reaches the lethal limit for plant tissues. By exposing young coffee plants and detached leaves to frost effects, the first symptoms of damage appeared when the air near the leaves reached -2ºC. Serious damage was observed under -3ºC. The solar radiation of the morning subsequent to the frost occurrence did not have any effect on the intensity of frost damage. Differences in frost resistence among the four studied varieties were not noticed. The use of detached leaves gave good results and is recommended in this kind of studies
